Common Support Issues

Backing Up PWC

PWC has a backup function. You should be running a backup regularly and saving it to a memory stick or other removable drive. Saving it to your hard drive won't help you if your hard drive crashes. Open PWC v3.5 and stay on the home screen. Click “backup” and select your memory stick as the destination for your backup. After you backup, look on your memory stick and make sure you see a folder named “PWC_databackup_3.5” -- inside that folder you should see a file named personal_wine_curator.pwc, that’s your data file. In the event that you have a program or computer failure, you can reinstall the software and restore your data from the backup.

If you are running PWC on two computers, in order for you to get your data from one computer to the other, you must transfer it by means of a removable drive (or, for subscribers to PWC mobile, via our server) and restore from your PWC 3.5 backup folder each and every time, replacing the existing data. (this means you have to be vigilant about remembering which computer has the most current data on it.)

A note about backups: after you create your first backup you should be replacing the file every time you backup in the future. If you don't get a message about replacing, then you are probably putting the file somewhere else (usually inside another backup folder -- like little Russian nesting dolls.) The backup folder is called PWC backup 3.5. Inside that folder there should be a data file called personal_wine_curator.pwc (which will show the date and time of the backup), as well as a folder called pdf. Make sure nothing else is in the backup folder. The date on the folder (when the backup was originally created) is not the same as the date on the data file (when the backup was last made). Always look at the date on the data file to be certain of the file you want to use to restore from.

Reinstalling PWC

Did you buy a new computer? Have a hard drive crash? Do you have a damaged program file? You can reinstall using our link and restore with the backup. You must have been running PWC 3.5 or higher.

First, make sure you have a backup of your data (preferably on a memory stick) by running PWC's backup function (or use whatever current PWC 3.5 backup you have), then delete v3.5, then re-install using the link below, and restore your data from the backup. It’s simpler than it sounds!

Look on your memory stick and make sure you see a folder named “pwc_databackup_3.5” -- inside that folder you should see a file named personal_wine_curator.pwc, that’s your data file. If it checks out, you're good to go.

For Windows:

After you have successfully backed up, quit PWC and uninstall it. To uninstall PWC, run the windows "remove a program" and go into your c drive and check to see that the PWC v3.5 folder has been deleted. If the PWC folder is still in your c drive, physically delete it. (the "remove a program" function is in the "control panel" which you access from the start button in the lower left of your screen.) Also, go to your start menu and see if there are any vestiges in there. If so delete them (shortcuts, whatever). Also, delete any installers you may have. It's important to delete any remnants of the program before you install it again.

1. Install PWC clean (new user). You can get the PWC installer here (v3.5.7):

Download (windows): http://thewinecurators.com/PWCv3_installer.exe (keep this link handy if you ever need to reinstall in the future)

2. After you have installed the software, open PWC v3.5 (ignore the prompts to register, etc. By clicking "never," etc. -- that stuff will all fill in after you run the restore function) and, from the home screen, click “restore from back up.”

3. When prompted, select the backup folder named “pwc_databackup_3.5” on your memory stick.

That’s it. PWC will quit automatically. When you re-launch the software, your data will appear, transferred from the backup file.

For Mac:

After you have successfully backed up, quit PWC and delete it. To do this, just go to your applications folder and delete the personal wine curator v3.5 folder. It's important to delete any remnants of the program before you install it again. Delete the alias too, if you made one. After you have deleted the v3.5 folder, follow these instructions:

Look on your memory stick and make sure you see a folder named “pwc_databackup_3.5” -- inside that folder you should see a file named personal_wine_curator.pwc, that’s your data file.

1. Install PWC clean (new user). You can get the PWC installer here (v3.5.7):

Download (mac): http://thewinecurators.com/PWCv3_installer.dmg (keep this link handy if you ever need to reinstall in the future, and while you're at it, keep the installer in your downloads folder)

When you are finished, we recommend that you run the backup function again and save it to a memory stick or other removable drive.

Running PWC on Two Computers

Your license allows you to install PWC on multiple computers. You simply install it new on the second computer and piggy back your data file with a thumb drive from one to the other using the “backup” and “restore” functions on the home screen. This will overwrite your data each time you do a transfer.

Here’s how to run PWC on two machines (or to get it from one machine to the other). (also check out the video tutorial “Running PWC on more than one computer” also: http://thewinecurators.com/videos.shtml):

Install PWC clean onto your other computer then just swap out the data file (PC or Mac). The data file contains your authorization information, so you will not have to re-register or re-authorize the second computer.*

On your first computer, launch the software and go to the Home screen and click "Back Up PWC" -- select a flash drive or other removable disk. PWC will create a folder called "PWC_databackup 3.5" and inside that folder will be your data file, named "Personal_Wine_Curator.PWC"**

For Windows:

1. On your second computer, install PWC clean (NEW USER). You can get the PWC installer here (v3.5.7):

Download (Windows): http://thewinecurators.com/PWCv3_installer.exe (keep this link handy if you ever need to reinstall in the future)

2. Load the memory stick on the second computer. Windows 8 makes you jump through some security hoops. When the installation warning pops up, click "more info" then "run anyway." also, make sure your anti-virus software doesn't block PWC and that you have the most current version of Java installed.

For Mac:

1. On your second computer, install PWC clean (NEW USER). You can get the PWC installer here (v3.5.7):

Download (Mac): http://thewinecurators.com/PWCv3_installer.dmg (keep this link handy if you ever need to reinstall in the future)

2. Load the memory stick on the second computer. Make sure you have the most current version of Java installed.

Now when you want to update the other computer, you simply copy and replace the old data file with the new data file!

IMPORTANT NOTES**

*ALWAYS MAKE A BACK UP OF THE DATA YOU ARE GOING TO REPLACE BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY REPLACE IT -- just in case you're replacing the wrong file.

**windows users: if you do not see the file named personal_wine_curator.pwc after you make your backup, make sure you are viewing all your files (none hidden) -- go to your Windows Control Panel and make sure you are set to "show hidden files" --

To show your hidden files and folders if you're on Windows XP: Start button (lower left of your screen) --> Control Panel --> Appearance and Themes --> Folder Options --> View tab --> check "Show hidden files and folders"... Then click "Apply" at the bottom of that window, then "OK.'

to show your hidden files and folders if you're on Windows Vista: Start button (lower left of your screen) --> Control Panel --> Folder Options --> View tab --> check "Show hidden files and folders"... then click "Apply" at the bottom of that window, then "OK.'

PWC and Anti-Virus Software

Are you getting errors when closing PWC, connecting to the PWC Community, or syncing your wines to PWC Mobile? You may have an anti-virus software interfering with PWC. Check your anti-virus program settings. PWC has its own browser. Any anti-virus software or firewall should allow for PWC to connect to the internet (add PWC (Filemaker Run Time) to the list of allowed programs). You may also want to disable your anti-virus and run a check. Also, make sure you have the most current version of Java running on your computer.

PWC Testimonials
I love this program! The PWC Community feature included with v3 is incredible. Not only does it make adding wines to my cellar much easier, I have really enjoyed being able to read other users' notes and to share my thoughts on wines I've enjoyed. I couldn't be happier with my choice of software and the support and personal attention I have received from the Wine Curators staff exceeded any expectation I could have had.

Tom H., Grand Rapids MI

Wow! That aging potential tool is way, way cool. Bloody amazing!! Again wow!!

Pat S., New Zealand

I just wanted to write you guys to tell you how impressed we are with PWC! I did a lot of research to try to find a software that fit our needs. We have around a 1,500 bottle collection and needed something to maintain the inventory. Even though I have a Computer Science degree I really didn't feel like reinventing the wheel; your product is perfect. I have recommended PWC to several friends.

Jay T., Edmond OK

The best technical support I have ever had!  I'm a customer for life!

Bill C., Poca WV

PWC is the third Wine cellar management software I have tried over the past year and it is by far the best. It is easy to use and is very intuitive. I was entering data within 10 minutes of downloading the trial version. For the wine novice it has numerous drop down menus which make it easy to categorize your wines and contribute to your wine education.

Ed Q., Boston MA

I want to thank you for the outstanding service your company provides.  The technical support is exceptional.  How you can provide a product of this quality and back it up with the level of technical support you provide amazes me.
